Staveley update

Updates from Companies House involving subsidiary companies related to Newcastle United caused a stir on Wednesday morning, specifically the resignation of Amanda Staveley from a number of directorships.

However, these updates were explained as administrative rather than strategic, with her position as a director of Newcastle United Football Company Limited unchanged - that company established back in 1890.

Club CEO Darren Eales is now also a director of that company, which is in keeping with previous holders of that post including David Stonehouse etc.

Newcastle U18s  4  Liverpool U18s  3

There was a memorable night for Newcastle U18s under the Whitley Park floodlights on Tuesday, coming from behind to defeat Liverpool despite being a man short.

The opening 45 minutes gave little indication of what was to follow, Liverpool going ahead in the 16th minute when Afolami Onanuga's unstoppable shot from outside the box crashed home off the left hand post.

Little had been seen of United as an attacking force before the interval, home 'keeper Aidan Harris denying Keiran Morrison after 28 minutes to keep it at 0-1.

United got the second period off to a great start when a corner from the right dropped for Josh Donaldson, who forced the ball home.

Donaldson then put his side ahead on 59 minutes after good work from Matheos Ferreira, the Magpies striker
finding the bottom right hand corner from 18 yards.

That lead only lasted for three minutes though; Trent Kone-Doherty converting a penalty following a shove on Josh Sonni-Lambie by Harry Powell in the box.

With the game at 2-2, the young Magpies were reduced to ten men in the 71st minute when Logan Watts saw red for a full-blooded, studs-up tackle on Onanuga.

The Reds then regained the lead three minutes later with the hosts down to nine men - Paul Brayson off the pitch injured - visiting substitute Ollie O'Connor heading in Joe Bradshaw's cross from the right.

Incredibly though it was all square again on 77 minutes; Liverpool's Tyler Martin heading into his own net after a centre from the right was swung into the box.

Another injury saw United's Darren Palmer replaced by Matty Taylor as the ten men continued to press forward - Ferreira bringing a noteworthy stop out of Kornel Misciur with three minutes of normal time left.

Five minutes of added time were in the process of being announced when another powerful surge from Donaldson gave Taylor the chance to shoot.

And the 16 year-old cleverly converted a low effort for his first goal at this level, incredibly making it 4-3 to United.

Some heroic blocking and defending from the ten men then kept Liverpool at bay, a gutsy second half display bringing just reward when Harris brilliantly tipped over a dipping shot.

The final whistle then sounded with six additional minutes played - an epic effort from the black and whites, ending a run of five successive home losses that had stretched back to January.

Victory also saw United complete a league double over the Reds following a 2-1 win on Merseyside in October when Sean Neave and Tom Bryant were on target.

Team: Harris, Watts, Bryant, Johnson, H.Powell, Palmer (Taylor 81), Bloomer, Ferreira (Durrant 38), Donaldson, O'Donovan, Brayson (Wooster 75).
Subs n/u: Ad.Harrison, Old.

Booked: H.Powell.

The threat of suspension has finally been lifted from Bruno Guimaraes

Update:

Isak burglary -
arrests made

From the BBC, Monday:

Four people have been charged in connection with a series of high-value burglaries which included the home of a Premier League footballer.

The home of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak in Darras Hall, Northumberland, was broken into and his car stolen earlier this month.

Cash, thousands of pounds of designer clothes, and jewellery worth £1m was also taken from other homes in Sunderland and Newcastle.

Det Insp Shaun Fordy, from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), said "these types of crimes will not be tolerated".

Isak's home was broken into on 4 April but his car was later found abandoned three-miles away in Dissington, police said.

Cash, expensive clothes and jewellery worth £1m were taken from a house on Clayton Road in Jesmond in March.

Jewellery worth £100,000, designer clothes and money were also taken from a house on Woodlands Grove in Sunderland.

Some of the property was later recovered by officers, NEROCU said.

Four Croatian nationals, aged 23, 27, 31, and 42, who had recently travelled to the UK from Italy, were arrested on Friday in the West Midlands.

They have been charged with burglary and are due to appear at Bedlington Magistrates' Court later.

Det Insp Fordy said the arrests had been made by NEROCU working in partnership with Northumbria Police.

“This operation demonstrates that these types of crimes will not be tolerated in our region, and the incredible lengths we will go to protect our communities," he said.

U21s
Senior Cup date set

A new date for the Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final between Ashington and Newcastle U21s has been agreed after the original slot fell victim to the weather.

The Colliers will host the Magpies at Woodhorn Lane on Thursday May 2nd at 7.30pm. There's no provision for extra time or a replay; if the scores are level after 90 minutes then the tie will be settled on penalties.

Advance purchase tickets are valid for the new date. Anyone unable to make the rescheduled tie can apply for a refund via [email protected]

At stake is a trip to SJP in the final, against either Blyth Town or Newcastle Benfield. Their semi-final meeting is scheduled for Wednesday April 24th.

Country call for Kuol

Newcastle's Garang Kuol is currently away on  international duty with Australia, with the Olyroos playing at the U23 Asian Cup staged in Qatar.

Australia are in Group D at the 16 team event and opened with a 0-0 draw in Doha on Monday. Kuol began on the bench and was introduced as a 69th minute substitute.

Next up is a meeting with Indonesia on Thursday, followed by a game against the hosts on Sunday - both played in Doha.

Kuol - joined by elder brother Alou in the squad - was selected after helping Australia reach the final of the WAFF (West Asian Football Federation) Championships in Saudi Arabia last month.

The top three sides in the competition will earn a place in the Olympic Football tournament in Paris between July 24th and August 9th. The side that finishes fourth enters a qualification playoff.

Update:

Join Hall.....

Speaking to Chronicle scribe Lee Ryder following the 4-0 home win over Spurs, Lewis Hall confirmed that the terms switching his loan move from Chelsea to a permanent transfer had been met:

"I am here now as a Newcastle player and I really enjoy it. The future looks really good for the club with so many young and talented players. It is going in the right direction."

"I played a lot of my early senior appearances at left-back or wing-back. But I like to be versatile and play in other positions if required.

"I used to be a midfielder when I was younger but wherever the gaffer wants me to play I will play."

The 19 year-old made his twelfth Premier League appearance as a Magpie on the day that victory for Newcastle confirmed they'd finish 14th or higher.

The second stipulation that Hall to be named in 30 or more first team squads was also met, meaning that a £28m switch from Stamford Bridge is now locked in.

Update:
Sports Direct v NUFC
- tribunal decision

Update:
Friday saw the Competition Appeal Tribunal rule that the Sports Direct claim against Newcastle United was insufficient to merit the granting of an injunction against the club.

The case will proceed to trial unless an alternative solution can be reached, with no delay to the June home kit launch permissible, regardless of whether said trial has taken place by then.

Sports Direct are challenging the club's plans to sell next season's shirts themselves and via retailer JD Sports - the latter gaining an exclusive licence.

Earlier: details of next season's Adidas kit releases were mentioned during the tribunal, including a home kit launch on June 7th, the away kit in July and a third kit in August.

Figures disclosed during the tribunal also suggest that the Adidas production run is around 375,000 shirts.

Update:

The group stage draw paired them with Leicester City, Tai Po and Singapore Cricket Club.

Born Or Died:

1877 Andrew Gardner born, Glasgow, Scotland. (1902-03)

Joining Newcastle from Grimsby Town in September 1902 having earlier played for Clyde, Andy debuted at outside left in a 1-2 home loss Liverpool two months later.

Playing the last of his ten first team games for United the following March, he moved on to Bolton Wanderers soon after.

Later appearing for Brighton, QPR and Carlisle United, Gardner lived in Carlisle following his retirement in 1912 and ran a pub.

1961 Ray Montgomerie born, Irvine, Scotland. (1979-81)

Defender who switched from local side Saltcoats Victoria to United in 1979, playing for the reserves and featuring in the senior team's pre season tour of Sweden a year later, scoring once.

Failing to force his way into first team contention and admitting to a degree of home sickness, Ray was released in 1981 and returned to Scotland with Dumbarton.

Seven seasons later he moved on to Kilmarnock in 1988 and enjoyed over a decade at Rugby Park, playing over 300 games and coming close to international selection for Scotland (included in a B team preliminary squad at one point).

Captaining the side to Scottish Cup Final success against Falkirk at Ibrox in 1997, Monty was awarded a testimonial against Celtic the following year.

He retired from playing after a final season with Partick Thistle in 2000 and returned to Killie in 2001 as commercial manager, having rejected the chance to join the Firhill coaching staff.

Continuing to serve Saltcoats as manager (later Chairman), Ray successfully completed a Lands End to John O'Groats charity cycle ride during 2009.

A season before joining the Football League, United played a limited Northern League season interspersed with friendlies - including home and away contests against the First Division Toffees.

This first-ever visit to Goodison Park came on a Monday (6.05pm kick-off), barely seven months after it opened, seen by "only a moderate attendance" according to newspaper reports.

Everton held a commanding half time lead thanks mostly to an outstanding display from Scottish winger Patrick Gordon.

United's two efforts came late on, after the hosts were reduced to ten men following an injury to their outside left Alf Milward.

There was pre-match crowd trouble outside the Den and an uneasy atmosphere all afternoon, with away fans locked in the terrace at half time for their own safety, without access to any facilities.

Following a nervy 1-0 home win over Aston Villa three days earlier, United secured a similarly jittery three points against a Saints side including SJP old boys Dave Beasant, Barry Venison and Alan Neilson.

And it was Beasant whose contribution was the most worrying; unable to reach Robert Lee's early opener but smothering a 33rd minute penalty kick from Peter Beardsley.

"You can't call us The Entertainers any more, we are grinding the results out now" commented Kevin Keegan afterwards.

Three years to the day that Peter Beardsley was denied from 12 yards, Alan Shearer saw his spot kick similarly saved in the same Leazes End goal.

The number would convert a second penalty after the break, but by then, however, United were behind to a Kevin Campbell brace - the first of which came after just 42 seconds.

Further misery then followed with a late beauty from Scott Gemmill. It wasn't a debut defender David Beharall will look back on with any great fondness...

Newcastle made their bow at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium three days after exiting from the UEFA Cup at the Quarter Final stage in Lisbon.

And sadly the 1-4 defeat in Portugal was emulated in Wales as a depleted side were second best right across the pitch.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were both banned following their on-field brawl while Laurent Robert was recalled after publicly slagging off manager Graeme Souness and losing his place in the UEFA Cup side.

The Frenchman's performance was pitiful but Red Devils double agent, Nicky Butt, was man of the match for the Mancs, gifting the ball away continually.

His parting shot was to heartily congratulate his old team mates before scampering off down the tunnel.

Support to the black and whites was both vocal and loyal - even at 1-4. Typical.

Newcastle secured their biggest away victory against the mackems since 1955, on what was a momentous afternoon for the club.

Deservedly behind at the break, the arrival of Michael Chopra for Lee Clark proved to be the turning point and within seconds, Chops had got us back on terms with his first touch.

A minute later, scorer Hoyte dragged Charles N'Zogbia to the ground and referee Chris Foy rightly pointed to the spot.

That allowed Alan Shearer signed off his derby career with a penalty to wipe out the memory of the one he missed at St. James' and the game was turned on its head.

N'Zogbia waltzed through the home rearguard and shot past Kelvin Davis for 3-1, before Shearer limped off after an accidental clash with Julio Arca left him with a career-ending knee injury.

His replacement Albert Luque then netted his first senior goal for the club to round off an incredible game and leave Glenn Roeder's side in seventh after four successive victories.

Former Town striker Daryl Murphy cancelled out Freddie Sears' first half goal but United then conceded twice more to tumble to their second successive defeat on the road.

With three games remaining, thoughts of the title appeared to have gone: Brighton seven points clear and Reading and Huddersfield Town both coming up fast on the rails.

A week after ending their barren run with a vital win at Burnley, another three points saw Newcastle rise further up the table from their precarious 17th spot.

They did it the hard way though: 2-0 up at half time against ten men who had netted an own goal before gifting Joelinton a second, Steve Bruce's side started snoozing in the sunshine and were duly punished.

Own goal transgressor Issa Diop was left alone to head home before VAR confirmed a Ciaran Clark handball in the area and Jesse Lingard fired in the resultant penalty.

Stunned into action, Joe Willock headed in the winner with his first touch, coming off the bench just 83 seconds earlier.

With the score 1-1 and the allotted extra four minutes ending, Matt Targett outwitted an opponent on his own byline and found substitute Joe Willock on the left.

Dashing into the City box, his deflected cross was met by Bruno Guimaraes with a diving header at the Gallowgate End.
